The Journey: Hopping Across the Internet

Your message doesn't fly straight from your device to your friend's. It hops, one stop at a time, using the addresses you just learned in Lesson 7.

💡 Quick recap: Lesson 7 gave your message two addresses to carry — a MAC address (permanent, local) and an IP address (assigned, works anywhere). Time to see both of them actually get used, one stop at a time.

1Passing a Note Across a Crowded Room

Imagine passing a note to someone clear across a packed classroom. You can't throw it that far accurately, so instead you hand it to the person next to you, they hand it to the next person, and so on — each person only has to make one simple decision: which direction gets this closer to where it's going?

That's exactly what routers do with your message. No single wire connects every device on Earth directly to every other device — instead, your message relays hop by hop, and each router only has to make one small decision before passing it along.

Real internet trips usually bounce through more routers in between than this — but the idea is exactly the same at every single one: check the address, decide a direction, pass it on.

4Why Not Just Send It Directly?

Building one direct wire between every device on the planet and every other device would take an impossible number of wires. Instead, everyone connects to a router nearby, routers connect to bigger routers, and messages relay through that web — the same reason passing a note hand-to-hand works better than trying to throw it across the whole room.

All of this — every hop, every decision — happens in a tiny fraction of a second, even if your message is crossing an entire ocean along the way.
